Well my computer decided to catch the flu and haven’t been able to cure it this far. Anyone know of any decent free antivirus software? In desperate need over here.

Try Malwarebytes if you’re having trouble clearing the infection with other anti-virus tools: https://www.malwarebytes.com

Avast is pretty good.

If you have Comcast, you can get Norton for free. If you don’t, most major ISPs pair with a big-name AV platform. Otherwise, Avast.

I also suggest Avast; been using it for 3 years now.

Go to safe mode with networking. Download malware bytes. Run it in safe mode. Restart in regular mode. Did it fix it?
Yes? Cool. Enjoy your PC
No? You got a pesky one.
Go to bleepingcomouters.com and download ComboFix. ONLY download from there, and only save on desktop. Run as administrator, and let it be - it has 50 steps. Warning - it can mess up your machine. I always had it work well and I always delete all viruses with it.
If that didn’t fix it, it is probably beyond repair for someone asking how to do it in the first place. Seek professional help.

But why would your computer warrant Norton?
...I kid. But that bad reputation isn’t going away.

Seconding the Avast + Malwarebytes combination here.
No, you don’t have to worry about conflicts, since the free version of Malwarebytes is on demand instead of being always on.

When I’ve gotten viruses that resisted disinfection, I’ve had good luck in the past with the
AVG rescue disc
. It’s an ISO (disc image for a CD) which you use to make a bootable disc. Boot up using the rescue CD and you can use the antivirus program on the CD to scan your hard drive for viruses, even when they’re embedded in your PC’s operating system, because you aren’t running your PC’s operating system, you’re running Linux.

Kinda along the lines of what others have said, I use Avast as a prophylactic, Malwarebytes if I need a little penicillin.
